Beef Casserole Recipe
Beef casserole is a hearty and comforting dish that combines tender beef, vegetables, and rich flavors, all baked together to create a delicious meal. Here’s a step-by-step recipe to make a classic beef casserole.Ingredients
For the Casserole:- 2 lbs (900 g) beef chuck or stewing beef, cut into 1-inch cubes
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 3 medium carrots, sliced
- 2 medium potatoes, diced
- 1 cup (150 g) frozen peas
- 2 cups (240 ml) beef broth
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- 1 tsp dried rosemary
- 1 bay leaf
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour (optional, for thickening)
For Topping (optional):- 1 cup (100 g) grated cheese (cheddar or your choice)
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Beef- Season the Beef: In a large bowl, season the beef cubes with salt and pepper.
- Brown the Beef: In a large, heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the beef in batches, browning on all sides (about 5-7 minutes per batch). Remove the browned beef and set aside.
Step 2: Sauté the Vegetables- Cook the Onions and Garlic: In the same pot, add the chopped onion and sauté for about 3-4 minutes until softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
- Add Carrots and Potatoes: Stir in the sliced carrots and diced potatoes, cooking for another 5 minutes.
Step 3: Combine Ingredients- Return Beef to Pot: Add the browned beef back into the pot with the vegetables.
- Add Liquids and Seasonings: Pour in the beef broth, red wine (if using), tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, rosemary, and bay leaf. Stir well to combine.
- Thicken (optional): If you prefer a thicker sauce, sprinkle 2 tablespoons of flour over the mixture and stir to coat the ingredients.
- Simmer: Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and let it simmer for about 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the beef is tender. Stir occasionally.
Step 4: Add Peas and Final Seasoning- Add Frozen Peas: About 10 minutes before the casserole is done, stir in the frozen peas. Adjust seasoning with additional salt and pepper if needed.
Step 5: Bake the Casserole (optional)- Preheat Oven: If you want a baked topping, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Transfer to Baking Dish: If using a Dutch oven, you can leave it as is. Otherwise, transfer the beef mixture to a large baking dish.
- Add Cheese (optional): Sprinkle the grated cheese over the top of the casserole.
- Bake: Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for about 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Step 6: Serve- Garnish: Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley.
- Enjoy: Serve the beef casserole hot, accompanied by crusty bread or a side salad for a complete meal.
Tips for Success
- Meat Choice: Chuck roast or stewing beef works best for a tender result. Avoid lean cuts, as they can dry out during cooking.
- Vegetable Variations: Feel free to add other vegetables such as bell peppers, green beans, or mushrooms based on your preference.
- Make Ahead: This casserole can be made a day in advance and stored in the refrigerator. Reheat in the oven before serving.
Enjoy your delicious homemade beef casserole, perfect for family dinners or gatherings!
